How ML London Came to Be
Mason Lane London is now officially up and running. Thanks to everyone for supporting this huge step for Maddie, who gets the most attention on social media for good reason. To coincide with this, we’re sharing how all of this came to be:
Maddie has been with Mason Lane since 2017. The firm started in 2014, but bringing Maddie on, in many ways, felt like the beginning. It was the start of building a staff and sustainable business model for the long term. Maddie quickly moved from part time intern to full time employee to being a crucial part of the business and my life. She has seen Mason Lane grow from one office to 4, go through staffing changes, a pandemic, moments when we had $3,000 in our bank account, sold paintings priced over $150,000, and so much more. She has also watched my kids grow up, seen me cry, had me with her in the ER, and been an invaluable partner through it all. I talk to her more daily than I probably talk to anyone else and at this point, we are telepathic.
One day in July, Maddie called me, per usual. We talked shop for a few minutes, and then she moves into “I do have one more topic to talk about, if you have time….” I have enough experience to know that this line usually leads to a major pivot. At that point, Maddie shared that she was moving to London for personal reasons. The implications this would have on my life and business were hard to digest, but I was smiling during the conversation, filled with pride; making such a big life choice takes bravery, and there is no one better positioned to take on this challenge than Maddie.
Over the coming weeks, we talked openly about options, ultimately deciding together that Maddie would launch Mason Lane London. This is an exciting change with no bad outcomes - we’re learning, growing, and supporting each other every step of the way. The enthusiasm received from people we know on both sides of the pond is also heartwarming. And although we work with a number of British galleries already, Maddie’s post in London positions her to build relationships with countless European galleries so we can provide our clients with even more access to quality art. During week 1 of her British adventure, Maddie scoped out some new galleries and this week she’s headed to Paris on a field trip with Business of Home.
So that’s how it has happened. We’re proud and sad and excited all at once and can’t wait to see how this evolves. Here’s what Maddie will officially be doing as Head of Advisory for Mason Lane London. In other exciting news, Kristen Coy has joined our team as Advisory Associate. Kristen holds a BA and Masters from NYU, has a fantastic eye, and has been training us as much as we are training her. I continue to be incredibly grateful to work with such quality people that have so much to offer.
Thanks for the nice words on our big transition, and stay tuned for progress of Maddie’s discoveries and adventures overseas.
